She is an enthusiastic, creative, and passionate counselor, trauma psychologist, mentor and advisor who believes that all individuals have the ability to recover and can learn to thrive successfully.Dr. Baty has a clear understanding of how important it is to give back to her community. She is a mentor for young women in the community as she has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence by achieving the highest academic degree: the Ph.D. She brings knowledge from the formal educational setting, as well as her personal experience.
The knowledge she's gained she uses in her private counseling practice and in the classes she teaches on the campus of Central New Mexico. Dr. Baty makes significant impact in her private practice because she is dedicated to making a difference for individuals who are survivors of physical and sexual abuse. Her approach, is holistic in that it addresses the psychological, social, physiological and spiritual effects of these traumas on the survivor. She believes in going beyond traditional modalities to explore the solutions that make a significant difference in her clients’ individual recovery process.
Among the traditional counseling techniques, Dr. Baty uses new alternative treatment approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brain Spotting to relieve the physiological and psychological symptoms associated with sexual and physical abuse; these treatments are highly effective in the treatment of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and other anxiety disorders. Dr. Baty's philosophy reflects her commitment to her patient's complete recovery. She provides her patients with an evaluation that best addresses their individual needs, concerns and aspirations. She has excellent listening and observation skills, and the willingness to spend time educating patient and family about diagnosis and recommended treatments. Her rationale for choosing the field of psychology as her profession helps create understanding of why she is a successful and committed professional.
Dr Baty stated, “I have always been interested in helping people. I believe many of us who go into the field of psychology are seeking to heal ourselves, and it is in that self-healing journey that we discover the natural ability to assist others in their healing. Those of us in the field have exceptional ability to connect with others in a profoundly empathetic manner. It was my personal triumphs that inspired me to seek higher education so I could be qualified to help others in their journey to healing. I truly love that I play a very small role in the success of my patients. It is in the witnessing of that healing and recovery of my patients that convinced me that I was in the right field.
"Dr. Baty's selfless commitment is again highlighted through the countless number of volunteer hours she has spent creating and participating in programs and activities designed to address individuals dealing with traumatic life experiences. She started and ran a non-profit called, WomenSPEAK Foundation Incorporated (for 2 years); it addressed the needs of sexual and physical trauma survivors. She has also created empowerment Programs for adolescents and organized adolescent gender specific assembly programs to educate at-risk youth on substance abuse, participated in health & safety drug use/abuse prevention/interventions programs and organized student assemblies with police department, local drug treatment centers, and 12 step programs.
While working in the schools, Dr. Baty created a curriculum called the Student Success and Accountability Program: Addressing Substance Abuse & Truancy curriculum in 2008. She also created a self-help booklet for sexual abuse survivors called the Spiritual Healing and Recovery Program: A Self-directed spirituality-based intervention for trauma survivors in 2008.In 2013, she felt compelled to share her own journey to healing so she wrote her biography called, I am me: a Girl, a Lady, a Woman: Reflections of the Transitioning and the Integrating of Three aspects of Self. Dr Baty wrote a healthy relationships book, called, “Why am I Attracted to the Bad Boy”. It examines the physiological and psychological attachment and betrayal bonds, answering the question of why women are drawn to unhealthy relationships.
Dr. Baty had this to say about her future plans, "in addition to building my practice, I want to open up a women's wellness center that addresses the holistic healing for women who have suffered physiological trauma. She would like the center to provide, spiritual theophostic counseling, EMDR, Braispotting, Reiki, deep tissue massage. Accupunture, biofeeback, advocacy and and education. I am also interested in doing more research on the impact of spirituality and alternative treatments in the healing and recovery of female childhood sexual abuse survivors.""I believe that all people have everything they need within them to heal. They just need help discovering it" ---- Dr. Sharon Baty
